Pollarding

In most cases the general idea of carrying out a pollard is when all of the trees limbs are pruned right back to the stem resulting with only the main stem or trunk remaining. Sometimes it is possible to leave what is known as a frame work of branches to begin a new pollard.

When the pollard has been completed the tree must be given time to re-grow so it has a chance to form a new shape. It is then important to keep the pollard process on going, so the tree can be maintained to a correct standard and be monitored.

But it is important to recognise the difference between pollarding and topping. Topping is harmful to trees and should not be carried out. Different species perform differently to others. Some species will react well to pollarding such as Willow, where as species such as beech will not react at all well to such heavy pruning and will result in death.
