Crown Reduction

This process involves reducing the size of the trees overall canopy. The ends of the branches are pruned back evenly throughout the crown. This then will give the entire canopy a new appearance with a smaller crown.

The most common scenarios of a crown reduction are done on canopy percentages. For example a small reduction may be a 10% reduction compared to a larger reduction which would 35 – 40% or maybe more depending on the species of tree. The fact being different species will react differently, some react to this procedure well other not at all well.

The idea in having a crown reduction carried out is when the tree has become over mature and it is no longer capable of supporting the larger limbs it holds. It is also possible for any species of tree to become unstable and it may be required that larger limbs are reduced to improve stability. One other reason could be that the canopy has become too large for its surrounding areas and needs to be pulled back in. This will then in turn make the stability of the overall structure much stronger relieving it from any excess weight.

Whilst this process is being carried out a general crown clean shall also be included relieving the tree of any damaged, dead or rubbing branches.
